What We Offer

Coverage Options for Tanker Operations

Tanker programs are more complex than standard trucking. We help build a policy that matches your commodity, hazard class, and contract requirements.

Commercial Auto Liability

Required coverage for bodily injury, property damage, legal defense costs, and settlements from covered tanker accidents. Available up to $5 million CSL for hazmat operations.

Auto Physical Damage

Covers your tractor and tanker trailer for collision, comprehensive loss, theft, vandalism, fire, and weather. Stated value and agreed value options available.

Motor Truck Cargo

Protects the commodity in transit — fuel, chemicals, food-grade products, dry bulk, or hazardous materials — from covered loss, theft, and transit damage.

Pollution Liability / CA9948

Covers cleanup costs, third-party bodily injury, and property damage from sudden and accidental pollution events — including fuel spills, chemical releases, and cargo leaks.

General Liability

Protects the business from non-auto liability claims including customer-site injuries, loading dock incidents, and delivery-related property damage exposures.

Misdelivery of Liquid Products

Covers liability from delivering the wrong product to the wrong location — a serious exposure for fuel, chemical, and food-grade tanker operators.

Loading & Unloading Coverage

Extends liability protection to incidents that occur during the loading and unloading process at terminals, refineries, chemical plants, and delivery points.

Trailer Interchange

Provides physical damage coverage for non-owned trailers you haul under a trailer interchange agreement with a terminal or fleet.

Excess Liability / Umbrella

Stacks additional limits over your primary auto and general liability — essential for fuel haulers, chemical carriers, and hazmat operations requiring $2M–$5M total limits.

MCS-90 Endorsement

Federal filing required for for-hire interstate carriers under FMCSA authority. Guarantees minimum liability payment to the public regardless of policy exclusions.

BMC-91 / BMC-91X Filings

Electronic proof of insurance filed directly with FMCSA to establish or maintain interstate operating authority for for-hire trucking operations.

Workers Compensation

Required when the business has employees. Covers work-related injuries for drivers, terminal workers, and yard crew.

Understanding Your Exposure

Tanker Truck Risks Standard Policies Don't Cover

Tanker operations carry exposures that standard trucking policies were not designed to handle. Make sure your program closes these gaps.

Bulk Liquid Spill & Rollover

Liquid surge in a partially-filled tanker can cause handling instability and rollover. Spills create immediate pollution cleanup liability, road closure costs, and third-party injury exposure.

Hazmat Classification Risk

Hauling Class 1–9 hazardous materials triggers higher liability minimums, special endorsements, and FMCSA placard requirements. Your policy must match the hazard class of your cargo.

Pollution & Spill Cleanup

A standard commercial auto policy excludes pollution. Tanker operators need a dedicated pollution endorsement (CA9948 or equivalent) to cover environmental cleanup and third-party contamination claims.

Loading & Unloading Incidents

Spills, overfills, valve failures, and hose disconnects at terminals and delivery points are common exposures. Standard auto liability may not cover incidents while the vehicle is stationary.

Food-Grade Contamination

Delivering edible oils, milk, or juice in a tanker not properly sanitized or previously used for chemicals can trigger a total product loss claim and regulatory liability.

Misdelivery of Products

Fueling the wrong tank, delivering to the wrong site, or cross-contaminating product are serious exposures for fuel distributors and chemical carriers — covered under a misdelivery endorsement.

Regulatory Compliance

FMCSA Liability Requirements for Tanker Trucks

Federal minimum liability limits for for-hire carriers depend on the commodity hauled and its hazard classification.

$750,000 CSL

For-hire carriers hauling non-hazardous liquids and dry bulk commodities in vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVWR in interstate commerce.

$1,000,000 CSL

For-hire carriers hauling oil, hazardous substances (non-Class A/B explosives), or hazardous waste in interstate commerce.

$5,000,000 CSL

For-hire carriers transporting hazardous materials including Class A/B explosives, liquefied compressed gases, or radioactive materials.

Required Filings

MCS-90

Federal endorsement guaranteeing minimum liability payment to the public. Required for all for-hire interstate carriers.

BMC-91 / BMC-91X

Electronic proof of liability filed with FMCSA to obtain or maintain interstate motor carrier authority.

CA MCP Filing

Motor Carrier Permit required for California tanker operations — insurer files proof directly with CA DMV.

State Filings

State-specific proof of insurance required by certain state DOTs for intrastate tanker and hazmat operations.

How to Get Quoted

What We Need to Quote Your Tanker Program
