Industry Overview

What Is Commercial Trucking Insurance?

Commercial trucking insurance is a specialized package of coverages designed to protect motor carriers, owner operators, and fleets against the financial risks of operating heavy commercial vehicles. Unlike personal auto insurance, trucking policies are structured around federal regulations, shipper requirements, and the unique liability exposures of moving freight across interstate and intrastate highways.

Primary Liability is the foundation — it covers bodily injury and property damage to third parties when your truck is at fault in an accident. Federal law requires a minimum of $750,000, but most shippers and brokers demand $1,000,000. Without it, you cannot operate legally.

Motor Truck Cargo protects the freight you haul against loss, theft, or damage while in transit. A standard cargo policy covers $100,000, but high-value commodities, reefer loads, and specialized freight may require higher limits.

Physical Damage insures your truck and trailer against collision, fire, theft, and natural disasters. If you have a loan or lease, your lender will require this coverage. It is based on the stated value of your equipment.

Trailer Interchange covers non-owned trailers in your care under a trailer interchange agreement. If you haul Amazon trailers, broker trailers, or intermodal containers, this is essential.

General Liability protects your business from claims that occur off the road — at a shipper's dock, a delivery site, or during loading and unloading. It covers slip-and-fall injuries, property damage at facilities, and other third-party claims.

Umbrella / Excess Liability provides additional limits above your primary policies. A $1,000,000 umbrella on top of a $1,000,000 primary liability gives you $2,000,000 total protection. It is inexpensive relative to the coverage and is often required by large shippers and intermodal contracts.

Workers' Compensation covers medical expenses and lost wages for W-2 employees injured on the job. It is required by state law in most jurisdictions. Owner operators using 1099 contractors may not be required to carry it, though some states have specific rules.

Learn more

Motor Truck Cargo

Protects the freight you haul against loss, theft, or damage in transit. Standard limit is $100,000. Higher limits available for high-value or temperature-sensitive cargo.

Learn more

Physical Damage

Pricing Guide

How Much Does Trucking Insurance Cost?

Trucking insurance is not a commodity. Your premium depends on your operation, your drivers, and your safety record. Here are realistic ranges and the factors that drive them.

New Venture

$12,000 – $18,000

per truck / year

Under 2 years DOT/MC. Higher rates reflect limited history. Programs available from day one of authority.

Experienced Owner Operator

$8,000 – $14,000

per truck / year

2+ years clean record. Best rates for strong BASIC scores, no major claims, and experienced drivers.

Fleet (per unit)

Varies by size

rated individually

3–100+ units. Fleet pricing depends on driver pool, equipment age, garaging, and fleet safety programs.

Rating Factors That Determine Your Premium

DOT authority age
MC authority age
Driver experience and MVR
At-fault claims and losses
Garaging ZIP code
Operating radius
Cargo type and commodity
Equipment value and age
FMCSA BASIC scores
CSA safety scores
ELD compliance history
Safety management programs

Federal Compliance

FMCSA & DOT Requirements

Federal compliance is not optional. FMCSA and DOT requirements are the foundation of your operating authority and your insurance eligibility. Carriers with poor compliance records face higher premiums, more roadside inspections, and potential loss of authority.

Your insurance broker should understand FMCSA compliance as well as your safety manager does. At Truxsurance, we review your CSA scores, BASIC categories, and authority standing before we quote — so we know which markets will compete for your business.

DOT Number

Your USDOT number identifies your carrier entity with FMCSA. It must be active and in good standing. New carriers apply through the FMCSA portal.

MC Authority

Motor carrier authority grants you permission to operate as a for-hire carrier. Active MC authority is required for most insurance markets and shipper contracts.

BMC-91X Filing

The BMC-91X is your federal proof of financial responsibility. Your insurer files it electronically with FMCSA. Without it, you cannot operate interstate.

FMCSA Safety Rating

Satisfactory or Unrated ratings are acceptable. Conditional or Unsatisfactory ratings trigger market restrictions and higher premiums.

CSA Scores

Compliance, Safety, Accountability scores measure your safety performance across seven BASIC categories. High scores = more inspections and higher insurance.

BASIC Scores

Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories track unsafe driving, HOS compliance, driver fitness, vehicle maintenance, and crash history.

ELD Compliance

Electronic Logging Device compliance is mandatory for most CMVs. ELD violations appear in your BASIC scores and affect both authority and insurance.

UCR & IRP

Unified Carrier Registration and International Registration Plan are required for interstate operations. Your insurance must align with your registered base state.
